Designing A Successful Capital Campaign
Planning & Mastering a Successful Program During Tough Economic Times
Further schedule details will be included with your registration confirmation letter.
These are not the easiest of times and yet philanthropy continues to be strong in our communities for those institutions and organizations who effectively involve their donors and give them a reason save a life or to restore a place.
This program is especially beneficial to those contemplating a $1 million to $100 million capital campaign. It is led by some of the nation’s premier campaign managers and trainers. You will capture a comprehensive view of the art and science of capital campaign fundraising.
During these two days we take you through every step necessary to make certain your capital campaign is carefully planned, implemented, and executed.
The focus is on your results— a success-oriented understanding of proven methods and applications that win campaigns.
You’ll learn how to build the campaign structure and determine a financial objective that cannot miss.
We discuss the feasibility study, campaign plan, recruiting leadership, budgeting and staffing guidelines, your case for support, packaging opportunities, recruiting and motivating volunteers, and the important role of your board. From beginning to end, you cover every aspect of a capital campaign. But it’s more than just techniques and mechanics. You’ll understand the art and strategy that make a campaign successful…and learn to avoid the pitfalls and disappointments
We explore all forms of social media and learn how to use these tools effectively to enhance fundraising potential for your campaign.
There will be ParkBenching —time for you to spend one-on-one with a faculty member to discuss your campaign questions and issues. And there will be table work, buzz groups and problem solving —time for you to work with colleagues and faculty about your campaigns.
If you want to ensure magic for your project, bring your campaign chair or a campaign leader to the Seminar (special fee of $335 for your guest). It’s essential in campaigning that volunteers understand the challenges, opportunities, and their unique role.
The Program
Here are the areas that will be covered during these two days:
The Most Important First Step— The Feasibility Study
The study is the building block in designing a winning campaign. It
must be creatively conceived. We’ll discuss who should conduct the
study, what data are essential, who should be interviewed, and what
findings are essential.
Key Components of The Plan
Setting the goal. Identifying and evaluating your prospects. The Giving
Pyramid and it’s importance. Implementing the Feasibility Study.
The Case For Support
Few tasks are more important— or more challenging— than developing the
statement of your case. We’ll examine how an effective Case Statement
leads to getting the gift.
Organizing Staff and Budgeting for The Campaign
The issues you’ll face in organizing, staffing, and budgeting the program, techniques, and guidelines.
Recruiting, Training, and Motivating Volunteers
We’ll give you practical advice and share pertinent experiences to
ensure success working with your volunteers. You will complete a
questionnaire that guarantees you will recruit precisely the right
chair for your campaign.
The Role of Your Board in a Campaign
What is good policy and practice? What are your options? What serves your donors best and your organization?
The Important Role of Social Media
We explore all forms of social media and learn how to use these tools effectively to enhance fundraising potential for your campaign..
Packaging Opportunities
How should you sell gift opportunities and memorials? What works and what doesn’t? What makes for an effective proposal?
Case Study of a Capital Campaign
During this session, you will examine an actual campaign from beginning
to end. You’ll evaluate plans, strategies, and tactics to determine
what you might do differently and how what you learn can be adapted to
your situation.

Three Distinct Activities During Our Seminar
There are three distinct activities that set the Institute apart from any other coaching experience. The first is what we call ParkBenching. Mark Twain once wrote that the most profound learning experience a person can have is to have a great teacher on one end of a log and a student on the other. Well, we do that, but we skip the log !
In ParkBenching, every registrant at the Institute has the opportunity for a one-on-one conference with a faculty member. The session is open-ended, with no prohibition on the topic.
How to advance in the profession, how to deal with a Chair that's not effective, having a problem with the boss, looking for a new job. You name it— whatever needs to be discussed.
Second is the Buzz Group. It is a small team of six registrants with a faculty member, discussing a topic of significance to their work. There are always two Buzz Groups at a Seminar— and most often four.
These small groups offer an opportunity, under a faculty member's leadership, to explore in depth an important topic. Peel back the layers and get to the very nub of an issue.
The 360 Rap is the third. 360 Rap provides an extraordinary opportunity for registrants to analyze a faculty presentation. Here's how it works.
The faculty member presents a topic. At the tables, following the presentation, in groups of six, registrants examine the material. Turn it inside-out. Review it again. Challenge. Explore. Analyze. Most important, they talk about the take-aways they can put the lesson immediately to use back home.
Attending a Seminar is an extraordinary experience. Many say the most effective and exciting coaching experience they have ever had. These three special activities, added to one of the most outstanding faculties available, provide a remarkable opportunity to learn, explore, and practice.
