The Hydra Leadership Institute
The Premise
Leadership is important because it ensures having maximum philanthropic support for your organization. It opens the flood-gate for effective fundraising.
In order to prepare you for this Seminar, forget everything you thought you knew about managing. The Seminar is about leadership. The two are entirely different. Leadership is both an art and a science, at times intersecting in wondrous ways.
Think about it as “push” and “pull.” A manager “pushes” people— from the top down. It’s about control, rigid structure, and regimenting and giving orders.
A leader “pulls” people upward to new heights. The leader motivates and inspires. Has vision and imagination. Is risk-taking and willing to make necessary changes. (Status quo is a sign of failure!)
Leadership is the ability to have “A” motivate “B” to reach “B’s” highest aspirations. It means having “B” achieve success beyond anything “B” thought possible.
The Seminar will focus on what makes a great leader and how to become one. And how to directly convert your development effort to help transform your organization.
What does it take? (The Seminar provides the answer) First, the leader sets high expectations for the department and the organization. Next, recruits outstanding people and empowers them to meet their highest aspirations. And finally, brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to work every day. That’s for starters!
Whether you are a small fundraising office (or even by yourself) or leading a large group of people, this Seminar will be of habit-altering consequence. You will begin the journey that leads to success.
We have never offered this Seminar before. If you want philosophy, it’s not for you. This is hands-on total immersion on leadership.
Prior to coming to Hdyra, registrants are required to complete The Leadership Inventory—a special instrument that measures you on 100 qualities and factors of leadership. You are ranked against a national norm. In one of the sessions, we discuss The Inventory and review your completed instrument.
What’s The Story About Hydra?
All of our Seminars in the past 15 years have been held in North America—the United States and Canada.
Having a Seminar in Greece was not a casual decision.
Two years ago we had our first Seminar on the island of Hydra and it was a resounding success. We had an overwhelming response from all who attended. The program was excellent and the island experience was unforgettable.
Why Hydra?
Well the truth of it is that it’s a perfectly personal decision. Felicity and Jerold Panas own a home on the island. They thought it would be fun to be your hosts. (They’re planning on some special activities.)
The island is beautiful. You’ll love it.
There’s no vehicular traffic of any sort on Hydra. Just mules and donkeys, and an odd horse or two. (You just need to watch where you walk!) The restaurants are great.
The hotels are less expensive than typical in the States where we have the Seminars. So there is some savings there. And the meals are a lot less expensive.
Holiday
You will certainly want to consider combining the Seminar with some travel around Greece and the islands—the most beautiful in the world. And September is a perfect time. The weather is gorgeous without what can be oppressive July and August heat.
Hotels
Check the website to choose the hotel and the cost that fits your budget best. We have inspected all we have listed. They are all excellent. All serve quite a nice continental breakfast that is included in the cost of the room.

The Schedule
The Seminar begins on September 3 and ends the next day, September 4. It will be a rigorous two days. We will go each day from 8:30 in the morning until lunch –2:00 pm. The Greeks eat lunch late.
We have left enough time for walking, swimming, and shopping before we begin again at 5:00 pm. We will work until 7:30 pm— which will give you a little time to relax before dinner.
How To Get to Hydra
From the Athens airport, you can go directly to the Port to board a boat. Or you may wish to spend a day or two in Athens.
In either case, you go to Pireaus by cab (about thirty US dollars), or you can take public transportation. From Pireaus, you go by hydrofoil to the island. It’s an easy 80 minutes or so.
If we know when you’re arriving, and we are available, we will try to meet the boat.
Registration
Soon after you register, you will begin receiving information. You will receive all of your material for the Seminar before you leave for the island.
More Information
You will likely have some questions. How much to take, what to wear, the temperature, and that sort of thing. We’ll be pleased to respond as best we can. |
