“I’m confused!” We hear from so many the same question. Nancy Salvati says she’s having trouble understanding all of the demographic terms. How do you tell the difference between an Echo Boomer and a Millennial, or a Gen Xer and a member of the Generation Y?

(We have the same problem!) Here’s the answer.

Generally speaking, generations of people are separated by fifteen-year intervals. The Gray Generation (or the matures) were born before or during World War II. The Boomers are a huge swath of the general population who came of age in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Generation X is a smaller demographic segment. This group was born between 1965 and 1976. And then there’s the tech-savvy Generation Y. (It is also known as the Echo Boom— known for being the first to grow up with technology readily at hand). This group is known for being a bit spoiled.

Meanwhile, Millennials have yet to develop. They were born after 2000.

Here’s a tip. Don’t try to generalize too much about these different groups. It’s highly unlikely that every member of an often arbitrary group would think the same way about everything or anything. A lot of times, it’s about attitude rather than about the actual age group. -Jerry Panas
