Collections on Capital Campaigns

Michael Barndollar is a consultant. He asks what is the appropriate amount you should count on in collecting pledges from a capital campaign. An excellent question.

We asked our friend (and competitor!) Doug Lawson to respond. Doug heads an excellent fundraising firm.

Here’s what Doug said:

Collection rates for pledges in capital campaigns are 90 to 95 percent. This is much higher than collections for direct mail, telephone solicitations, and special events.

Actually, we have found the attrition to be a little less than Doug. I would have responded to Michael that unless there is an unforeseen situation where one of the major donors cancels the pledge, the attrition should be no more than three percent to five percent. We find so much depends on having solicitors (both board and staff) who are well coached and committed.

Another exception is with employees and staff in a typical hospital campaign.  In this situation, you typically take pledges (payroll deduction) over a three-year period. Sometimes, five years. There is a great deal of turnover in this group and the attrition rate is probably closer to fifteen to twenty percent.  You make up for this by adding new employees on a regular basis, and soliciting them.
