Has Charitable Giving Increased?

The Bank of America examined the giving of the wealthiest individuals in the United States. The analysis of the study was made by the Center on Philanthropy.

The target universe was household incomes of at least $200,000 with a net worth of at least $1 million. 

One of the most significant findings of the study.

Answer:
The study shows that charitable donations by the wealthiest individuals have grown over the past five years. This is lead by entrepreneurs and rich volunteers. Almost two in three wealthy Americans indicate their giving has increased over the last five years.

People who amassed their fortunes through starting their own businesses were more generous than other wealthy groups. And then, of no surprise at all— generates a higher level of financial contribution. The amount donated increases as the volunteer hours increase. 

Nine out of ten responded say they give to meet critical needs. Almost as many cite a desire to give back to charity.

Giving More to Charity

In the survey, households were asked what factors would cause them to give more to charity. By far, high net-worth households said that if charities spent more on helping the constituencies they serve and spent less on administrative and fundraising expenses, they would give more to charity. High net-worth households also said they would give more to charity if they were able to determine the impact of their gifts, if they felt more financially secure, and if they received a better return on their financial.

Net Worth

A very high proportion of high net-worth households donate their time to charity.  Many, 61.1 percent, serve on a board of directors for a nonprofit organization, and 61.8 percent volunteer to help charities raise funds.
